Modern Architecture Design Baroque by Denys Lasdun and Partners

Early 60s saw a rather unusual brief glimpse of something akin to ‘Modern Baroque’, which even today appears a bit odd. During this period a huge investment in the expansion of Universities was taking place. It is possible that the invigorating traditional University Town architecture and the reaction to post-war austerity got better of even some straight-faced architects to produce some uncharacteristic examples of playful designs.

It is also worth remembering that at this time London was ‘swinging’ with Beatles and Cinema and Arts were also in ascendancy.
These recent photographs can be compared with the scans of original 1965 slides shown in this photostream. As you will see, most of the older shots are now impossible to take because of various new construction around these buildings.
It is also a coincidence that these two buildings are close neighbours in Cambridge.
