On July 25, Tate director Sir Nicholas Serota unveiled the Basel-based firm Herzog & de Meuron’s dramatic design for a 247,500 square-foot expansion to the Tate Modern in London.

It’s always interesting to see the houses that architects design for themselves, and for Dan Heinfeld, president of LPA Architects, his goal was not only to build a beautiful and livable home, but also a sustainable one.

As the plot does not allow for traditional front or back gardens, the design incorporates open air spaces within the build structure. The open floor plan with its voids generates exciting views inside the volume and enhances the relation between inside and outside spaces. As the wooden facade is vertically extended, the roof provides a hidden garden with a maximum of privacy.
