Architecture Design of SHIFT Cottage by Superkül Architects

The graphic lines of the cottage are designed to further marry it to its site—highlighting through contrast the wind-sculpted trees and craggy rock of the Bay that make its landscape unique. A glass link bridges between the cottage’s two volumes one containing living spaces, the other sleeping and washing areas and a wood deck terraces down to fold into the island on three sides. Window openings throughout are aligned to allow through views to the trees behind and the open water in front. The pure forms of the cottage are highlighted and reinforced through material choice, including knotty cedar cladding, a standing seam metal roof, and a dry-laid stone fireplace.

Natural Home Design by IROJE KIMHYOMAN Architects

After all, the shape of the main mass of this house was to be an irregular polyhedron due to polygonal shape of site and legal code to secure the range to absorb the sun-light, and naturally, this result is equal to the intent of formation to harmonize with the context of the surrounding nature. From this cause, exterior space of this house is composed of system to circulate, inner court extended to distant view, rear garden extended rear hill, sunken garden, recreational garden, each other.

By separating small office space and housing, each other, the neutral exterior space which occurred in between of them act as an approaching space, the place of penetration through courtyard and backyard each other, and the recreational court covered with roof. The public major space, living room, dining room, bridge theater, master living, homebar, billiard room, guest living room, swimming pool are planned to be the scene of each other through the mutual communication of view.

The project looked for a strong relation with the exterior landscape without repeating the urban model of a house with small openings. This is why the ground floor’s sector that faces the lake opens almost completely to the exterior, with large floor to ceiling windows. These large glazed panels that let the light in also allow to get in direct contact with the garden’s grass, the water in the pool and the lake.

The southern elevation screens the interior from the driveway and road above, but allows southern light in through the clerestory windows. As you enter, a dormer rises up over the dining area to frame the view. The main house is modest in size, only 1,700 square feet, but feels spacious due to an open floor plan. The clients’ wonderful art objects are housed in the long southern wall bookcase. The exterior is clad in cedar siding with a metal roof and the interior features a Douglas fir ceiling and decking, sheetrock walls and Ipe flooring.
